Electron mean free path from angle-dependent photoelectron spectroscopy of aerosol particles.

چکیده
We propose angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of aerosol particles as an alternative way to determine the electron mean free path of low energy electrons in solid and liquid materials. The mean free path is obtained from fits of simulated photoemission images to experimental ones over a broad range of different aerosol particle sizes. The principal advantage of the aerosol approach is twofold. First, aerosol photoemission studies can be performed for many different materials, including liquids. Second, the size-dependent anisotropy of the photoelectrons can be exploited in addition to size-dependent changes in their kinetic energy. These finite size effects depend in different ways on the mean free path and thus provide more information on the mean free path than corresponding liquid jet, thin film, or bulk data. The present contribution is a proof of principle employing a simple model for the photoemission of electrons and preliminary experimental data for potassium chloride aerosol particles.

Oxide Overlayers and the Superconducting Rf Properties of Yttrium-processed High-purity
. . Superconducting rf surface resistance measurements were made on oxidized Nb cavities that been warmed for a few minutes to temperatures between 250 and 300°C. Warming usually reduced the temperature-dependent (BCS) part of the surfa...

متن کاملThree-dimensional electron realm in VSe2 by soft-x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy: origin of charge-density waves.
The resolution of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) in three-dimensional (3D) momentum k is fundamentally limited by ill defined surface-perpendicular wave vector k(perpendicular) associated with the finite photoelectron mean free path. Pushing ARPES into the soft-x-ray energy region sharpens the k(perpendicular) definition, allowing accurate electronic structure investigations ...
متن کاملPhotoelectron spectroscopy of CdSe nanocrystals in the gas phase: a direct measure of the evanescent electron wave function of quantum dots.
We present the first photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of quantum dots (semiconductor nanocrystals) in the gas phase. By coupling a nanoparticle aerosol source to a femtosecond velocity map imaging photoelectron spectrometer, we apply robust gas-phase photoelectron spectroscopy techniques to colloidal quantum dots, which typically must be studied in a liquid solvent or while bound to a su...
متن کاملLayer-dependent magnetic properties at Fe surfaces using spin-polarized electron emission spectroscopy (SPEES)
We have studied the angle-resolved energy distribution of spin-polarized electrons emitted during ion-surface scattering. At clean Fe surfaces, electron spin polarization values (ESP) of up to 48% are found. Varying the scattering angle of the ions from 1 ° to 45 °, we find that the layer-dependent, average ESP at the topmost surface layer is enhanced by 32% compared to that of the bulk and tha...
